Pilot Docs by Homer
The two great Greek epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, are thought to have been written by a man known as Homer. Not much is known about his man, but it is thought that he must have lived in the 9th or 8th century B.C., and probably lived in the Ionic area of Asia Minor (the central part of the western coast). The Iliad is the story of the seige and fall of the ancient city of Troy. The ancient Greeks were attacking Troy because Paris, the son of the king of Troy, wooed and stole away Helen, the wife of the Spartan king Menelaus. Understandably upset, Menelaus convinced his elder brother, Agamemnon, and a bunch of other kings and princes to join in the "rescue" operation. The Greeks all sailed over to Troy, and laid seige upon the city for 10 years, until it finally fell, due to the famous "Trojan Horse." The Odyssey is the story of Odysseus, the king of an island called Ithaca, and his return home from the sacking of Troy. Along the way, he meets with a great number of divinely inspired mishaps. When he finally gets home, he finds that there are a number of unruly suitors at his palace, eating his food, drinking his wine, and bugging his wife, Penelope, to choose a new husband. They reason that since Odysseus has been gone for 10 years (fighting at Troy) he must be dead. Odysseus then has to hatch a plan to get rid of them. |
